Pan Am's
First Lady

Pan Am's First Lady. The Diary of Betty Stettinius Trippe is a revealing and intimate account by the wife of the legendary founder of Pan American World Airways. The book comprises a collection of Betty Trippe's memoirs beginning in 1925 when she first met Juan Trippe, an energetic young aviator who had recently formed Colonial Air Transport and was operating the first air mail contract between New York and Boston.

From a private and very personal perspective, Betty Trippe provides a unique account of many of the major events in the history of Pan Am including her recollections of the 1929 Caribbean survey flight with Charles and Anne Lindbergh and her experience on the 1937 inaugural flight to Hong Kong.

Initially published fourteen years ago as a limited private edition, the book has been republished by PALADWR PRESS in association with the Pan Am Historical Foundation and contains a thoughtful foreword by Reeve Lindbergh.

Copies can be ordered for $30, plus $3.50 shipping from the Historical Foundation at the address below.

1997 Pan Am
Calendar
Reflects the
Glory Days

The glory days of its propeller planes - during and after World War II - are celebrated in the 1997 Pan Am calendar, which the Foundation has mailed to all members. The calendar also describes and honors the exploits of the Pan Am personel who flew under contract to the War Department, delivering aircraft and cargo to combat areas.

Beginning with the Boeing 314s - the only passenger planes able to cross the Atlantic when the United States entered the war - the calendar showcases the DC-3, which Pan Am crews flew over the Hump to China; the Lockheed Hudson Bombers they delivered to North Africa to help turn the battle of El Alamein, and the Navy flying boats they used to rescue victims at sea. It goes on to the planes that introduced mass air transport; the DC-4, 6B and 7, the elegant Constellation and the luxurious Stratocruiser.

Activities of the Foundation

Pan Am Building
Plaque

The Foundation's preservation efforts recently resulted in the placing of a commemorative plaque in the lobby of the Pan Am Building in New York.

Pan Am
Documentary
Project

Preliminary work has begun on production of a documentary detailing over 60 years of aviation pioneering by the men and women of Pan Am. A production company has been selected and script development has been started.

Pan Am Museum

Work has started on establishing a permanent museum of Pan Am's accomplishments. The Foundation acquired many of Pan Am's corporate archives and deposited them at the Richter Library of the University Of Miami. The Historical Association of South Florida has been appointed the official custodian and is in the process of cataloging these artifacts of American aviation.

The Association's objective is to acquire Pan Am's original Dinner Key flying boat terminal, presently the Miami City Hall, to serve as the permanent museum. Individuals wishing to donate or loan memorabilia should contact the Association at 305-375-1492 and ask to speak to a curator.

The China Clipper

On November 22, 1995, in San Francisco, the Foundation sponsored the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the historic First Trans-Pacific by the famous China Clipper. The celebration was attended by a number of national and local dignitaries, including former Pan Am staff who worked with the "flying boats" in San Francisco, who were on hand to witness the re-creation of the historic "First Trans-Pacific Flight".
